Lockdown at Srinagar Jamia Masjid on Final Friday of Ramadan; Mirwaiz Detained at Home, Reports

Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said that authorities locked the gates to the Grand Mosque in Srinagar on the last Friday of Ramzan and that he was not allowed leave his residence to lead prayers.

“Today, on the occasion of Jumat-ul-vida, state authorities have not allowed prayers at the Jamia Masjid for the fifth consecutive year. I have also been detained at home,” the Mirwaiz said in a video statement issued after the media were not allowed to meet him.

He said it is “sad and unfortunate” that authorities “snatched this opportunity from us and forcibly locked the gates of Jamia Masjid, not allowing this great religious congregation to take place, causing great distress, anguish and pain to you and me”.

“We, the people of Jammu Kashmir, protest this authoritarianism and direct violation of our religious rights,” he said.

The last Friday of Ramzan is an important date in the Islamic calendar. It draws people from different districts of the Valley for prayers at the Grand Mosque and to listen to the Mirwaiz’s sermon.

“Repeatedly, this centre of Islam in Kashmir is subject to enforced lockdowns by the authorities. And repeatedly, I am put under house arrest on Fridays to prevent me from going to Jamia Masjid,” the Mirwaiz said in the video.

He went on to say that each Friday was “a day of uncertainty and anxiety for me as I do not know if I will be allowed to go to Jamia Masjid or not, depending on the will of the authorities”.

“A few hours before noon, I am conveyed what that decision is and if I can go to Jamia Masjid or not,” he said.

In his message, the Mirwaiz also offered prayers for the Palestinian people, saying, “We are all painfully aware of the great suffering that the people of Palestine are going through. Let us remember them in our prayers today. May Allah ease their suffering and pain and deliver them justice.”

He also prayed for the health and early release of “thousands of our youth and political prisoners, leaders languishing in jail for years”.

In September last year, the Mirwaiz was released from house detention after a period of four years. However, in October, he was again not allowed to lead Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid.

In a petition before the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, he argued that he was placed under “illegal detention” and that this is “discrimination in real sense and in real perspective”, which goes against Article 14 of the Constitution. After this, the court sought a response from the J&K administration, following which he was again allowed to lead prayers at the Grand Mosque.
