Stating that ongoing elections in the State had ‘no legal, constitutional or moral validity’, Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani Tuesday said they (polls) were being conducted ‘under the shadow of gun and are a blot in the face of democracy.’
“Holding polls in an internationally acknowledged disputed territory in presence of lakhs of armed forces is travesty of democracy and vain attempt to mislead the international community,” Geelani said in a statement, adding that “We as a nation are the worst sufferers facing retributions, massacres, persecutions, tortures and detentions for the last 67 years.”
“On one hand, the so- called elections are being held and on the other, our youth, students, political leaders and workers are detained in police stations and jails. How can they justify these elections,” Geelani added. Condemning the ‘curbs and other suppressive measures’, Geelani said, “It is highly deplorable that the young boys who used social media were also arrested. New Delhi is hell bent to muzzle the people’s just and genuine voice for their right to self-determination. First comes physical security and political freedom, and then the development and other things.”
Ongoing polls sans ‘moral validity’: Geelani
