Waqf Bill Debate: Divisive Politics or Governance Reform?

J&K NC Leader Criticizes BJP’s Waqf Bill as Diversion Tactic

Srinagar, April 2, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) leader Mian Altaf Ahmad has strongly criticized the BJP-led government for introducing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, calling it a “ploy” to divert public attention from pressing issues like unemployment and inflation. Speaking during the Lok Sabha debate, Altaf accused the government of using the bill to create divisions within society and undermine India’s secular character.

Key Concerns Raised

Altaf argued that the bill raises serious questions about the government’s priorities. “Instead of addressing the economic challenges faced by the country, the government is instigating emotions and dividing society,” he stated. He emphasized that the bill fails to alleviate concerns regarding Waqf land rights and transparency, leaving Muslims feeling marginalized.

Opposition’s United Front

The INDIA bloc, including Congress, AAP, and other opposition parties, has united to oppose the bill, labeling it unconstitutional and divisive. AAP leader Sanjay Singh echoed Altaf’s sentiments, accusing the BJP of introducing the bill to distract from issues like inflation, unemployment, and the falling rupee.

BJP’s Defense

Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the bill, stating that it aims to improve the administration of Waqf properties and ensure transparency. BJP allies, including JD(U), TDP, and LJP (RV), have backed the bill, emphasizing its potential benefits for marginalized communities.
