Valley Politicians Slam Ex-Governor Satya Pal Malik Over Corruption Charges | Kashmir Politics

Srinagar 23 May 2025:  The recent chargesheet filed against former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik in a corruption case related to a hydropower project in Kishtwar, Jammu, has sparked a heated debate in the Valley. Politicians from various parties have come out in criticism of Malik, accusing him of branding Kashmiris as corrupt during his tenure.

Sajjad Lone, chairperson of the Peoples Conference (PC), has strongly condemned Malik’s alleged corruption and his past statements about Kashmiris. “While I feel bad for the ex-governor’s current health condition, it’s undeniable that he heralded the most vicious and slanderous campaign against Kashmiris, branding every Kashmiri as a corrupt soul,” Lone said.

Lone further alleged that Malik had appeared on numerous television channels, voicing his negative opinions about Kashmiris, their culture, and their way of life. “He harboured a contemptuous hatred for Kashmiris and lied through his teeth. That he has now been booked under a corruption case is karma. He was the author of the crackdown in 2019,” Lone added.

Mehbooba Mufti, chief of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former J&K chief minister, has also criticized Malik, blaming him for playing a pivotal role in the disempowerment and fragmentation of Jammu and Kashmir. “Sorry to see Satya Pal Malik in such a critical condition undergoing dialysis following kidney failure. At the same time, CBI has filed a chargesheet against him in connection with alleged corruption in the awarding of a hydropower project contract in J&K,” Mufti said in a post on microblogging platform X.

Mufti further stated that some may see this moment as a reckoning, a complex chapter in the legacy of a man who played a significant role in the disempowerment of Jammu and Kashmir. “His actions have had far-reaching consequences, and it’s essential to hold him accountable for his deeds,” Mufti added.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against Satya Pal Malik in connection with alleged corruption in the awarding of a hydropower project contract in J&K. The case relates to the 850 MW Ratle Hydroelectric Project in Kishtwar district of Jammu.

According to the CBI, Malik allegedly gave undue benefits to a private company, allowing them to execute the project without following the proper procedures. The agency has accused Malik of violating the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
