Two held for acid attack on Kashmir college girl

Two people have been arrested on charges of throwing corrosive liquid on a young woman who suffered horrific injuries in her face in Kashmir’s summer capital, Srinagar, police say.

The 21-year-old girl was outside her law college in Soura when unknown car-borne persons threw acid on her face leading to serious injuries on December 11.

The police chief in Kashmir, AG Mir told the press meet that they arrested Irshad Ahmad Wani and Mohammad Omar Noor after a special investigation team headed by a top police from officer Hazratbal got vital clues.

The girl was attacked as she was nearing her college in Tawheedabad as two youths in a car halted briefly in front of her and suddenly squirted the acid from a bottle.

Mir says the attack was a result of Wani being spurned by the girl. Wani, the police say, careful planned the attack along with his business partner Noor and at least recceed seven times before carrying the attack. Both the accused had been stalking the girl. “Wani lured Noor with money to carry out the attack after the spurn by girl left him in a vengeful huff,” Mir says.

“We first arrested Wani, who hails from Wazir Bagh and during his sustained interrogation we found some vital clues which led to arrest of Noor who lives in Bemina,” Mir says.

He say the accused bought the sulfuric acid from a shop in Batmaluen.

On the day of attack, police say, Noor, after being lured with money, borrowed a car from his uncle, who didn’t have a clue about his plan. “They both drove the car to the college and sprinkled the acid on the girl. In the attack, some acid spilled over his hand and he was hurt,” he says.

Noor told his family that he injured his hand during a mishap while driving, he adds.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old acid attack victim, who was shifted to Chennai for specialised treatment of her burn injuries, underwent another surgery on December 23.

The girl has been operated upon twice so far, sources said, adding a portion of her face and one of the eyes were badly damaged in the attack.
