Dachigam National Park fencing fragile, risks life

Wild animals come out, destroy crops, damage property

A herd of wild animals at Dachigam National Park sneaked out of the fenced area –destroyed crops and property worth lakhs at Harwan on Srinagar outskirts -while locals said such incidents occur frequently.

“The Wildlife Department had installed electric fencing spending lakhs of rupees on the contract. The electric fencing was installed to stop wild animals from moving out from National Park. The fencing is faulty and weak and has not stopped these animals from sneaking into human inhabitations,” the locals of Harwan told CNS, a news gathering agency.
“The appearance of wild animals created panic among locals. Bears, monkeys, deer frequently appear in the local areas,” Abdul Satar, a resident said adding that the locals brought the issue into the notice of  the concerned but to no avail.
When contacted DFO Dachigam Abdul RoufZargar said that electric fencing has got damaged at several places and the department would repair it soon.
