Govt committed to help flood-affected: Div Com

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Rohit Kansal, who unfurled the tricolor and inspected the guard of honour at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar on India’s 66th Republic Day, said the government was committed to help the flood-hit people of the State.
“The government is committed to help the flood-hit people of the State,” Kansal said addressing the January 26 function in Srinagar.
He said an amount of Rs 200 crore had already been distributed among the flood-hit people as relief besides 600 shelter sheds had been constructed by the Public Works Department and NGOs in Kashmir.
Kansal said 500 bridges and about 1000-km road length had been repaired and restored in the flood-affected areas of Kashmir.
He praised people for rescuing the flood-hit population and providing relief material to them.
The State was hit by one of the worst floods in a century on September 7 last year in which 282 people died while property worth billions of rupees was damaged.
Kansal said that the State had already approached Government of India for providing assistance to help the flood-hit people.
“We will provide all possible help to the flood-affected people,” he said.
The divisional commissioner also complimented Police for holding peaceful parliamentary polls and Legislative Assembly elections.
“Jammu and Kashmir Police, security agencies, officers and officials associated with the conduct of the elections did a wonderful job by holding peaceful polls,” he said.
Kansal also lauded people for their massive participation in parliamentary polls and Legislative Assembly elections.
He said for giving a boost to tourism sector of Kashmir, there was a need to give wide publicity to the measures undertaken for the promotion of tourism industry after floods for massive inflow of tourists.
The divisional commissioner said tourism sector was vital for the improvement of socio-economic conditions of the people.
“Special drives have been launched for removing encroachments from the banks of river Jehlum and its tributaries,” he said.
Later, Kansal took salute of the march past, in which contingents of paramilitary BSF, CRPF, ITBP, J&K Armed Police, IRP, Women’s Police Force, District Police, NCC, Fire and Emergency Services and students of various educational institutions participated.
On the occasion, artists of Information Department, Jammu and Kashmir Academy for Art, Culture and Languages, Youth Services and Sports and students of various schools presented a cultural program.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Abdul Gani Mir, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Shah, SSP Srinagar Amit Kumar and other civil and police officers were present on the occasion.
