New Delhi Playing with fire : Hurriyat (G) – WP Refugee Row

Hurriyat Conference (G) Tuesday held its executive body meet (Majlis Shoora) to discuss the recommendations regarding settlement of West Pakistan refugees in J&K.
The meeting was chaired by its Hurriyat (G) General Secretary Haji Ghulam Nabi Sumji and was attended by the representatives of all constituents at its head office here.
The participants had a detailed discussion over the recommendations regarding the settlement of West Pakistan refugees and giving them voting rights in the State assembly elections, its ill-effects and other repercussions. Besides arrangements for a day-long seminar scheduled on January 29 to discuss WP refugee issue were also finalized.
According to Huuriyat (G) spokesperson the seminar will start at 11:00 am at Hurriyat head office Hyderpora. He said many prominent political leaders, intellectuals, lawyers and civil society members will present their view point on “Refugees sa mutaliq sufarishaat – Muslim aksariyat kay liye Lamhai Fiqriyah” (Recommendations regarding WP Refugees – testing time for the Muslim majority in J&K).
In his presidential address, Sumji said the WP refugees can in no way be permanently settled in Jammu & Kashmir and it is the moral and constitutional responsibility of the Government of India (GoI) to settle them somewhere in Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan.
He said that firstly the constitution of Jammu & Kashmir doesn’t allow any non-state subject to become the citizen of this state and secondly this state is an internationally accepted disputed region of the world and its status can’t be changed.
Sumji added that the ruling party men (BJP) are “extremely communal and sick minded people and they have very dangerous policies and plans regarding Kashmir.” “They not only want to change the demography of the state but are also desperate to eliminate the Muslim identity of the state.”
Sumji cautioned the policy makers in New Delhi that they are “fiddling with fire and their policies in Kashmir can any time trigger a violent situation.”
“Hurriyat (G) is starting a public awareness campaign and in first stage seminars and distribution of literature regarding proposed move to settle WP refugees in J&K is concerned, will be done.”
