Curfew-like restrictions in Tral

A day after witnessing massive protests against killing of a youth by Army, curfew like restrictions were imposed in Tral township in this south Kashmir district on Wednesday.
Authorities had deployed large contingents of police and CRPF personnel in anti-riot gears across the Tral township to prevent people from taking to roads and staging demonstrations.
All roads leading to main town Tral were barricaded with concertina wires and armoured vehicles. People were not allowed to leave or enter the area unless there was an emergency.
Massive protests had taken place in Tral yesterday after army killed a youth Khalid Muzaffar Wani, brother of a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant Burhan.
“Tough restrictions were in place in the town today. Even we were not allowed to visit Khalid’s house to express our condolences with his family members,” some locals of Tral said over phone.
Schools, colleges, educational institutions and other commercial establishments in the town remained closed and traffic was off the roads.
In Pulwama, a partial shutdown was observed.
A police official said situation in the town was tense but peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere.
The chairmen of both factions of Hurriyat Conference had called for a shutdown in Tral area against killing of Khalid in army firing.
Khalid Muzaffar Wani was killed by Army men Monday afternoon in upper reaches of the Kamala forests of Buchoo area in Tral.
The army alleged that he was an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of militant outfit.
However, his family contested Army claim and alleged that Khalid was killed in cold blood.
“His nose, skull and a hand was broken while his wrists bore marks of a rope,” deceased youth’s father Muzaffar Wani.
He said Khalid’s body had scratches on his back and his teeth were also broken.
“The marks on Khalid’s body prove that he was murdered in a well planned manner,” alleged Muzaffar.
Police corroborated army’s version saying it cannot be ruled out that Khalid was an OGW of a militant outfit.
