Kashmiri doctors divided over prescribing of generic drugs

Kashmiri medical fraternity is sharply divided over the government order asking doctors to prescribe generic medicines instead of the branded drugs.
While one association of doctors warned of an agitation if the government did not revoke the order, another group supported the idea appealing the government to implement Drug Policy in total.
A faction of Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Tuesday said the authorities have not taken into consideration their strong opposition to the order.
“We appeal government to revoke this order immediately in order to prevent doctors from agitation,” Dr G M Mir, Chairman Working Committee said.
“Without making generic medicines available in hospitals, how could a doctor leave a patient at the mercy of a chemist who lacks the basic knowledge of pharmacology of drugs,” he said.
On the other hand, Dr Nissar-ul-Hassan, President of the separated faction DAK openly supported the government’s directive about prescribing generic medicines.
“It’s an excellent idea as the gullible patient will feel eased out due to cost cut. The generic medicine is sold at very cheaper prices as the manufacturers don’t invest in promotions, branding and researching on drugs,” he said.
Last month government issued an order directing that no doctor under its control shall use brand name of any medicine prescribed by him.
“Only medicines of generic salts shall be prescribed by such doctors. Any kind of deviation of the circular instructions shall be dealt strictly in accordance with law,” the government directive said.
