Kashmir packages to go cheaper

The move is aimed to give fillip to the tourism sector which went under distress following devastating floods in Kashmir.

Come July, the Kashmir packages will become cheaper; stakeholders believe it will attract backpackers.

With an aim to increase influx of visitors to Kashmir, the hoteliers here announced 40 per cent discount on tariff from July to September 2015.

The move is aimed to give fillip to the tourism sector which went under distress following devastating floods in Kashmir.

The hoteliers have taken the decision after they were pursued by Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed to announce discounts from July to September to make Kashmir packages cheaper. The period between July and September is considered off season.

Talking to us, Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Hoteliers’ Club, Mushtaq Ahmad Chaya said they have collectively taken up the decision to give rebate on hotel tariffs from July to September.

“We have announced 40 per cent discount on hotel bookings from July to September with a hope that it would increase the tourist influx to Kashmir,” Chaya said, adding that currently tourism sector is under depression following the negative publicity by national media about flood situation in Kashmir.

The decision to announce discount has been taken by all major hoteliers association of the Valley such as Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Association, Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Owners Federation and JK Hoteliers club.

President, KHAROF, G M Dug said the move was the need of the hour. “Currently tourism sector is passing through bad times as negative publicity has ruined our business. Hotel sector is under distress, so we have to make every effort to encourage tourism to the Valley.”

President, KHARA, Showkat Chowdhary informed that all the hoteliers in the Valley have been taken into consideration before announcing the decision.

“Everybody in hospitality sector is desperate this time to increase influx of tourists to Kashmir,” he said, adding that government has done its bid to promote Kashmir tourism and now it is turn of stakeholders.

“We believe that the move to announce discounts of 40 percent on hotel tariffs will encourage backpackers to visit Kashmir,” he added.

The Chief Minister and tourism officials in last few weeks have attended tourism fairs and organized travel mart in Kashmir to clear notion about the situation in the Valley.

Meanwhile the decision to announce discount on hotel tariffs have been appreciated and applauded by the tourism players including travel agents.

President, Travel Agents Association of Kashmir, Peerzada Fayaz said it is a welcome step which would have good impact on tourism sector.

“This season has proved not so good for tourism sector,” he said adding that now the decision of hoteliers to announce discount will increase influx of tourists.
