Woman dies in Sogam hospital after pharmacist, nurse ‘operate’ her

A 29-year old, pregnant woman Rubeena of Kakarpati Diver was admitted to sub district hospital Sogam on Saturday evening.

A woman died allegedly due to the negligence of doctors and staff of the Sub-district hospital Sogam triggering protests against the hospital management on Sunday.

She gave birth to a male baby at the hospital in the evening after a normal delivery was performed by a pharmacist and an FMPHW of the said hospital.

The woman complained of chest pain at around 10 pm and due to the absence of doctor she couldn’t receive proper medication.

Unable to bear the pain the women died at around 11 pm.

Imtyaz Ahmad Khan, husband of the woman said that he admitted his wife in Sub District Hospital Sogam at 4 PM.

“A Pharmacist and an FMPHW of the hospital agreed to conduct the delivery of my wife in Sogam hospital on the condition of certain amount as a “Chai”.  For the successful delivery of my wife I paid them around Rs 1500   and around

6 PM, the normal delivery was performed by the pharmacist and FMPHW,” he alleged.

“After the delivery, the medicos left the patient in ward and after a while the condition of my wife started worsening and I pleaded before hospital staff to save the life of my wife but they were busy in watching TV in their night room and when I returned back my wife  was dead,” he said.

He has lodged a complaint in Police station Sogam and as SHO Sogam asked the concerned doctor about the incident, he said that he knew nothing about such a patient as the delivery was performed by a pharmacist and other Para medical staff of the hospital without informing him.

Following the death of woman, her parents and relatives staged protests on Sunday at Sogam and declined to bury the dead body until an FIR is registered against the hospital management and staff for their negligence and dereliction of their duties.

Protestors placed the body of the woman at the Sogam road and raised slogans against the hospital management.

Additional District Development Commissioner  Kupwara,  A. R Gassi along with Chief Medical Officer  KupwaraDrMuneer Ahmad reached Sogam and pacified the protestors after assuring them strict action against the management  and staff of the hospital if found involved. After the assurances from district administration protestors dispersed off peacefully.

Later an autopsy of the woman was conducted at Primary Health Centre Lalpora.

Meanwhile an FIR vide No. 30/2015 u/s 304 of RPC has been registered in police station Sogam against the hospital management and staff.

While talking to us, Chief Medical officer Kupwara, Dr Muneer Ahmad said “inquiry into this unfortunate incident has started. From the initial investigations it seems as a case of maternal death caused due to PPH (Post PartumHemohorrage and there is some negligence on the part of hospital staff and management”

“We have attached Block Medical Officer Sogam on the directions of directorate of Health services Kashmir,” CMO added.
