Flash floods damage 50 structures in Bandipora

Flash floods triggered by incessant rains on Thursday evening have damaged scores of houses, school buildings and other structures in Bandipora.
Flash floods damage 50 structures in BandiporaAn administrative officer said over 50 structures, including 30 residential homes; few school buildings and other structures have suffered damage due to flash floods since Thursday.
Due to cloudburst on Thursday and resultant flashfloods in Bilal Colony Ahamsharif, 30 residential houses were damaged. One kilometer of Ahamsharief-Athwatoo road stretch was also washed away and several flood protection works damaged.
Scores of houses were waterlogged in Ward 2 and 3 Bandipora due to the swollen Jinder Kohl.
Flash floods also damaged Government High School Ahamsharief after water entered the class rooms.
“All the class rooms were waterlogged due to flash floods.  In addition the open roof top of the school added to the problem,” locals said.
Locals alleged that Roads and Buildings Department is ignoring the school and left the construction of roof top halfway.
There was water-logging in many commercial and residential areas in Bandipora town due to overflowing of streams in Gadar Kohl. Locals appealed Deputy Commissioner Shah Faseal to initiate anti- encroachment drive in the stream to save human lives in future.
Meanwhile people from various localities on Friday staged protest against Border Roads Organization and accused it of ignoring the Bandipora- Gurez road.
Protests erupted in Ajar, Kharpora and Nusoo when rain water from potholed road entered many houses located on the road side.
The protesters accused BRO of ignoring the Bandipora-Gurez road and said it has virtually a non- motorable road now.
“From last five years we are approaching the administration and BRO officers but to no avail. BRO officers are acting arrogantly,” said Ajez Ahmed, a local.
They demanded legal action against Chief Engineer BRO for being “unmoved” despite knowing the worst condition of road.
Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Shah Faesal visited the affected areas and assured people of requisite relief. He ordered immediate assessment of damages.
