Flash floods wash away woman, footbridges in south Kashmir

A woman was washed away in flash floods caused by cloudburst in Tral area of south Kashmir on Monday, police said.

Flash floods wash away woman, footbridges in south Kashmir26-year-old Ashiya Begum, wife of Nazir Ahmad Jigri, a resident of Thikri Gandthal area of Tral was collecting firewood in the forests when the flash floods hit the area at around 2:45 pm today.

Her body was recovered a mile away by rescue teams of police.

In another incident, several bridges and diversions were washed away in flash floods caused by a cloudburst in Hurpora area of adjoin Shopian district.

“At around 3pm, cloudburst in the Hurpora forest area led to flash floods in a local stream Kawkul. The flash water washed away four foot bridges in the area, disconnecting many residents from each other,” locals said.

“Some residents were also trapped in the water but they were rescued by police and locals.”

They said flash waters also damaged crops in the area.
