Kashmir eyes Limca records by hosting longest Iftar in Asia

The Kashmir Valley is all set to make a new record of holding the longest public Iftar in Asia on Saturday.

About 3500 people will form a 4,962 feet long chain of dastarkhans (dinning cloth) at the the Dal Lake on Saturday.

Organised by an event management company, Loud Beetle, the people will be treated to a delicacy spread of biryani, juice, dates and fruits, all free of charge.

The company is organising the event in cooperation with a number of businessmen and civil society groups.

The main invitees for the event are the thousands of children who have been left orphaned in the 20 years of armed struggle in the valley.

“The event is also open for locals as we have invited over 2000 students from local orphanages,” said Abdal, an employee of the event management company.

The company has also approached the Limca Book of Records for the event.

Although there has been no such public event in the past, but organising free iftar for less wealthy Muslims during Ramadan is a tradition followed in the state for centuries.

The record for world’s longest iftar is held by Egyptian city of Alexandria, which set a new Guinness world record earlier this week.
