Experts to find measures to ease traffic congestion
On October 17, experts and stakeholders will sit on the banks of the Dal Lake to discuss short and long-term measures to overcome the problem of traffic congestion in the twin cities of Srinagar and Jammu.
The experts and panellists will meet during a day-long seminar “Traffic Management in J&K” at the SKICC in Srinagar. It is being organised by Institution of Studies, Learning and Analysis (ISLA) – an NGO.
Additional Director-General of Police, Armed, SM Sahai, who is Director ISLA, said they had studied traffic in the capital cities through drones and a documentary would be shown during the seminar.
“The documentary that has been prepared will be shown during the seminar so that all the stakeholders get an idea of the traffic in J&K and the problems that lead to frequent congestion,” Sahai said.
He said these days Srinagar and Jammu were witnessing an upsurge in the number of vehicles. The rising number of vehicles coupled with inadequate infrastructure was causing traffic congestions in the cities and national highways.
“The management of traffic has become a hot issue and masses are suffering because of frequent jams, especially in the two capitals, and the highway connecting them. These issues will be discussed in the seminar,” he said.
He said the first session of seminar would be on infrastructure and Sudeep Gupta, Deputy General Manager (DGM), Rail India Technical and Economic Services Ltd (RITES), an expert, would be among the expert and panellists’ team. The other panellists of this session are Satish Kumar Razdan, Chief Engineer, PWD, R&B, Kashmir, and Iftikhar Ahmad, Chief Town Planner, Srinagar.
In the second session, the topic will be on safety. During this session, Dr Rohit Baluja, president, Indian Road Transport Education (IRTE), and Director, College of Traffic Management, Faridabad, would be another expert to join the team. The other panellists of this session are Dr Saleem-ur-Rehman, Project Director AIDS Control Society, J&K, M Ashraf, Former Director-General, Tourism, Expert on Road Engineering from NIT, Hazratbal.
During the third session, discussion will take place on the topic of regulation and Dr PS Pasricha, former Director-General of Police, Maharashtra, will be the expert. The other panellsts of this session are GN War, president, Private Schools’ Association, Kashmir Province, Alok Kumar, DIG (Traffic), Kashmir.
