Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project a BOOM Or a Disaster in Making

Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project a BOOM Or a Disaster in Making

Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project a BOOM Or a Disaster in MakingThe famous Kishanganga project has already casted its shadow over flora & fauna of district Bandipora, which includes the famous Wullar Lake, centuries old pines are being cut and all ironically done at the cost of development.

Sane voices are worried that serene environ of Bandipora , Water bodies are being polluted, rare fish species are dying due to poisonous discharges from the project sites. All these activities are going under the noose of district administration, who is terming this disaster as development.

Is district bandipora ready for the real disaster? The execution body NHPC has two inline projects, which are already facing troubles due to poor construction and both the projects have been build by famous Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. Uri II & Nimo Bazgo are the best examples for the people at helm, but projects of such national importance are still being awarded to companies like HCC, who in turn exploit our resources as well misuse national funds.

While providing projects to these big organizations, one expects great quality with best workmanship, but in reality what we getting on ground level? To add more margins to their turnover, these companies in turn outsource the work to different people who are least bothered about the quality paradigms and environmental concerns.

KGHEPThe project has proved a money minting machine or the officials of the both the organizations, who have made fortune keeping quality & safety at bay thus risking lives of hundreds & thousands of people living around the Kishanganga.

For a project of such national importance as well esteem, one would expect a good team with great experience. But unfortunately Kishanganga is no different for NHPC & HCC. Project is being handed over to the subcontractors who haven’t build a wall before, but today they are building the dam & power house. What would be the outcome from such inexperienced team? Yes, we are moving towards a disaster, on commissioning the project, would the tunnels as well powerhouse hold the pressure of the water coming from the dam? The material / the quality and the workmanship don’t assure so. These organizations are putting lives of thousands of people living around the catchment area of the project in great danger.

District administration should wake up as soon as possible to take stock of the situation so such disasters won’t take place. On Holistic Paradigm, Kishenganga project presents a dismal picture especially with reference to its implementation .
