6.5 magnitude earthquake strikes North India, Pakistan; tremors felt in Kashmir, Delhi, ChandigarhA 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan, Jammu & Kashmir and Northern India in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Heavy tremors were felt in the regions of North-East Pakistan, PoK, Indian administered Jammu & Kashmir and parts of Northern India, including Delhi-NCR.

The quake is epicentered in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan, 242 kilometres north of Pakistan’s Peshawar. Although, the quake measures 6.5 magnitude on the richter scale, its ferocity is declined, since it is originating from 209 kilometres beneath the surface. High-alert has been issued in Jammu & Kashmir and parts of Pakistan.

Residents of Jammu & Kashmir are in a panic situation, with many people assembling outside their homes in the midnight. “The tremors were heavy and stayed for at least 3 minutes. This is a serious situation,” said Anantnag resident Aamir Salati.

In the past, a 7.2 magnitude struck the same region, originating from Hindu Kush belt. A major loss to life and property were reported in the Pashtun dominated regions of North-West Pakistan. At least 112 people were reportedly killed.
