Traffic Police Srinagar installs cameras at vital points to nab violators
The Traffic Police Srinagar has begun a process of installing cameras in various areas of the City at ‘vital locations to nab traffic violators.
The Traffic officials told , that the purpose was to track all those drivers and riders who break traffic rules. The Driving Licenses of the people who get caught from now on will be suspended for 3 months.According to the officials, the cameras have been acquired from the Police Head Quarters. The authorities have installed 10 cameras at various traffic intersections near Jehangir Chowk, Maulana Azad Road, Residency Road, Ram Munshi Bagh, Tourist Reception Centre, Dalgate, Golf Crossing, Ex-CM residence, Exhibition Crossing, Fire Service Crossing and Hyderpora.
“For now we are using cameras with tripods. Soon CCTV cameras will be installed at the identified locations,” said an official.
We observed that a car broke signal at the four-way near Sangarmall. Despite coming in front of the car, the ‘on duty’ traffic police official could not stop it.
“What can you do when they speed up and run away? You have to save your life and they take advantage of it,” said a traffic police official.
Senior Superintendent of Traffic police Srinagar, Maqsood-u-Zaman told that the department has briefed some of its cops about handing these cameras.
“This will put an end to the Red Light jumping culture here. For now we are doing it in the city. We will further expand this idea as we move along,” said Zaman. He also said that those people who break the rules and run away freely will now be caught.
“If anyone is seen breaking the signal, the concerned official will communicate it to the police deployed at the next signal. Still if he/she is missed, we will check our recordings and file a challan against the accused, “added Maqsood.
“The driving license will be recovered and suspended for 3 months. They will have to collect it from Regional Transport Office then,” he added. Moreover, the department will be installing CCTV cameras on traffic signals in coming days.
