Anti-polythene drive at Lal ChowkIn a bid to aware masses about the hazards of using polythene, an Anti-Polythene Campaign under “Go Green Srinagar” was organised by Earth Day Network, USA, Department of Environment, Ecology and Remote Sensing, Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Youth Parliament of Jammu and Kashmir at Lal Chowk Srinagar. The event was supported by Sanctuary Asia and Wildlife Conservation Fund.

The local commuters were enlightened about the various hazards of polythene. Impact of using  polythene (non-biodegradable) on soil, water and air was instilled among the by passers and local shop keepers.

Besides awareness, people carrying polythene bags, were given free jute bags to replace polythene bags, later those polythene bags were taken by SMC to dispose it off.

To appreciate the responsible citizens, flowers were given to the people carrying jute bags of their own.

Chief Sanitation Officer, SMC Manzoor Ahmad appreciate the role of volunteers to conduct such Programmes. Muzaffar Jan Bazaz, Mass Media Officer, DEERS thanked volunteers and assured full support for such activities.

While thanking SMC and DEERS, Bhatt Aadil, Project Manager Earth Day Network said we must not rely on government departments too much, everyone must take a stand to make Srinagar a better place to live in.

Representing Wildlife Conservation Fund, Maajid Ashraf said they are ready to support departments to conduct such activities in future.
