clashes-in-noorbagh-after-youth-succumbs-who-was-hit-by-forces-vehicleClashes erupted between protesters and security forces in the Noorbagh area here today following the death of a youth, who succumbed to his injuries at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), this morning.
The incident took place when the body was being taken to Eidgah cemetery for the last rites, reports said. The police lobbed teargas shells after the angry youth indulged in stone-throwing on police and CRPF personnel and their vehicles. The youth, Rizwan Ahmad of Bhagwanpora, Noorbagh, was injured after his motorcycle was hit by a vehicle of the security forces last week. He was undergoing treatment at SKIMS where he succumbed to his injuries early today.
Elsewhere, even as the overall situation across Kashmir remained peaceful, shutdown and restrictions to maintain law and order continued to affect normal life in the Valley on the day 129 of the current unrest. This has been the longest spell of protests marked by shutdowns and clashes between protesters and police and CRPF men in the region, triggered by the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani in south Kashmir on July 8. It has claimed the lives of at least 87 people, including two J&K policemen, and injuries to over 12,000 others, including civilians and security forces personnel, so far.
A semblance of normalcy is being witnessed by the increasing movement of pedestrians and vehicles on the roads over the past few weeks. The secondary school examinations also began today. Over one lakh students appearing for the Class XII examination, converged at 484 centres in different educational institutions across all 10 districts of the Kashmir valley.
However, shops and business establishments were closed and public transport continued to remain off the roads. Passenger cabs could be seen moving along with private vehicles and autorickshaws on different roads in the capital and major owns. As the market places are closed in response to the separatists’ shutdown call, the footpath vendors have been thronging these places in a large number. “This is not a usual footpath vending stuff…. standard woollen garments and other merchandise are also available on these handcarts and charpoys,” said a passerby at Lal Chowk.
The market places opened during the “relaxation” period of 15 hours beginning at 4 pm for the past two consecutive days in accordance with the separatists’ protest calendar extended to November 17.
