City continues to remain submerged under rainwater

Don’t have enough manpower to tackle waterlogging: SMC

Despite tall claims by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to ensure immediate draining of rainwater from the city, for the third consecutive day city remains inundated due to rain water.
A day before Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) official said that they are putting every effort to drain the rainwater from submerged areas and within a day the situation will be normal in civil lines of Srinagar city, however on Monday situation didn’t change much as the areas were still submerged.
Areas like Hari Singh High Street, Magarmal Bagh, Residency Road, Polo-view, and Amira Kadal Sarai Bala are under water from last three days, the residents of these areas are themselves trying to drain the water but found difficult due to inefficient drainage system.
Residents across the city are accusing SMC of not being prepared despite being were aware about the damaged drainage network and the weather.
“SMC officials are aware about the situation and weather. Like previous years this year again they proved insensitiveness,” a resident of Magarmal Bagh said.
Sources in the SMC said that although they are trying hard make things normal, but lack of manpower and not having enough dewatering pumps are main reasons they are incapable of meeting the challenges.
He said, “SMC has not enough manpower and equipment to coup with the challenges like water logging.”
Not only residential colonies, but business and traffic movement continued suffer due to the water logging at different areas in City Centre, Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk and Residency Road, giving tough times to drivers and commuters to move on waterlogged roads.
Residents from areas Hyderpora, Tangpora, Bemina, Jawahar Nagar, Natipora, Eid-gah, 90-feet Road and several other places told KNS that these areas are still underwater, and for an eyewash authorities do work for an hour and leave.
The water accumulation in colonies and roads at different areas of Srinagar City and the authorities claims seem to have fallen flat as the ground reality in the city is different from the promises made, as residents continue to be affected by the problem of waterlogging.
