Governor N N Vohra steps in to defuse Student Unrest in Valley

  • Seeks to insulate educational system from recurring disruption

Governor N N Vohra has stepped in to defuse the escalating tensions in the wake of unrelenting protests by students across valley.
On Wednesday, the Governor had extensive discussions with Minister for Education, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari at Raj Bhavan based on the inputs received from the various quarters to find a way out of the current unrest involving students.
Bukhari briefed the Governor about the steps taken by the School and Higher Education Departments “to see that students are protected from involvement in law and order incidents”.
A day earlier, Vohra had asked Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti to take all required steps for ensuring that the student community is “immunized against any involvement in law and order situations”.
According to the official statement, Governor Vohra was “deeply disturbed” by the recent student protests “leading to public disorder”.
After conveying his concerns to Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, the Governor also held discussions with Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof Khurshid Andrabi and President of the D.P. Dhar Memorial Trust which runs the DPS School, Vijay Dhar.
In his meeting with Prof Andrabi, Vohra stressed the role and responsibilities of the Vice Chancellor, Deans and the Faculty in ensuring against any “unhealthy influences being allowed to adversely affect the teaching schedules in the colleges and universities”.
As per the official statement, after deliberating on the factors which have led to the involvement of students, including girls, the Governor has decided to hold urgent further meeting with the Vice Chancellors and other stakeholders “for agreed further action being taken for ensuring against recurring disruption of the educational system in Kashmir Valley”.
“He has been repeatedly stressing his concern that the educational interests of the entire student community must be vigorously advanced and selfishly protected and, under no circumstances, should the future careers of the student community be allowed to get exploited or compromised in any manner,” the statement reads.
Since the opening of the Durbar in Srinagar the Governor has held a series of meetings in connection with the maintenance of law and order and internal security.
