Mukhtar Dohi an Off-Duty CRPF Personal shot dead by unknown gunmen in Shopian

An off-duty Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was shot dead by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian on Saturday, police officials familiar with the matter said.

According to officials, 34-year-old Mukhtar Ahmad Dohi was fired at by terrorists near his residence.

“At about 7.35 pm, terrorists fired upon the CRPF jawan, who was on leave, near his home in Chotipora area of Shopian. He succumbed to his injuries while on way to a hospital. The area has been cordoned off,” a police spokesperson said on condition of anonymity.

The incident comes days after officials recovered the body of 28-year-old missing army jawan, Sameer Ahmad Malla. Police said they were investigating the case and were looking into the possible role of terrorists in Malla’s death.

There has been a spurt of targeted killings in Kashmir in less than two weeks. Shabir Ahmad Mir, a sarpanch from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, was gunned down by terrorists on Friday. On March 9, an independent sarpanch, Sameer Bhat, was shot dead on the outskirts of Srinagar. A week earlier, terrorists killed an independent panchayat member, Mohammad Yaqub Dar, in the Srandoo area of Kulgam

Condemning Dohi’s killing, former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: “A very worrying spurt in (attacks) the last 7-10 days with off-duty security personnel, mainstream political workers & civilians targeted. My heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased CRPF Jawan Mukhtar Ahmed.”

Sajjad Lone, the chairman of the J&K Peoples Conference, called the attack a “condemnable act of terror”.

“Killing an unarmed CRPF person in Shopian, who had come home on leave is barbaric and gruesome. Human lives in Kashmir have no values. The security situation in Kashmir is seriously concerning. Prayers for the departed soul. RIP!,” he tweeted.
