Tayyip Erdogan rakes up Kashmir Issue at UNGA; Expresses hope for ‘Permanent Peace’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday raked up the Kashmir issue during his address at the United Nations General Assembly session in New York. Erdogan said that India and Pakistan had not been able to establish peace in Kashmir even after 75 years of their independence.

Addressing the high-level meeting, the Turkish President expressed hope for “permanent peace” in the region. “India and Pakistan, after having established their sovereignty and independence 75 years ago, they still haven’t established peace and solidarity between one another. This is much unfortunate. We hope and pray that a fair and permanent peace and prosperity will be established in Kashmir,” Erdogan said as quoted by PTI.

The Turkish President raked up the Kashmir issue in less than a week after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on Friday. During this meeting, PM Modi and Erdogan reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries.

Notably, Turkey is a close ally of Pakistan. Erdogan mention had also referred to the Kashmir issue in his earlier UNGA addresses. It caused strain in the ties between New Delhi and Ankara. India called Turkey’s previous remarks on Kashmir “unacceptable”.

Last year, Erdogan mentioned US resolutions on Kashmir during the UNGA meeting. Notably, after Pakistan, Turkey was the only country to have brought up Kashmir in the 193-member UNGA. Meanwhile, in 2020, the Turkish President had called the Kashmir situation a “burning issue”. he had also criticised India’s move to abolish the special status for Kashmir.
