Excise Policy in J&K: CM Omar Abdullah Dispels Liquor Vend Expansion Claims

Omar Abdullah Denies Reports of New Liquor Vends in J&K

Jammu/Srinagar, March 13, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has categorically denied reports suggesting that his government is planning to open new liquor vends in the Union Territory. Addressing the issue on social media platform X, Abdullah dismissed the claims as “fake news” and urged media outlets to refrain from spreading misinformation.

Clarification on Excise Policy

In his statement, Abdullah explained that the number of JKEL-2 vends (wine shops) in Jammu and Kashmir has remained unchanged at 305 since the fiscal year 2023-24. Of these, 291 vends are located in Jammu and 14 in Kashmir. He emphasized that no new liquor vends have been advertised or allotted under his administration.

The Chief Minister elaborated on the recent e-auction process conducted by J&K Bank on February 15, 2025. Out of the 305 vends, 271 were successfully allotted to H1 bidders, while the remaining 34 locations are set to be re-auctioned through a public notice. Abdullah assured that all details regarding the Excise Policy and the location of the vends are transparently available on the official website of the Excise Department.

Addressing Misinformation

Abdullah criticized the spread of false information, stating, “TV channels and news portals should immediately stop peddling this lie.” He reiterated that the reports circulating on social media about an increase in the number of liquor vends are baseless and misleading.

Broader Context

The clarification comes amid growing debates over liquor policies in Jammu and Kashmir. While the government has maintained its stance on transparency and consistency in its Excise Policy, the issue has sparked discussions among civil society and political circles.
