Omar biggest opportunist: Azad

‘Kashmiris rejected BJP, Hurriyat by voting in large numbers’

Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Rajya Sabha and Member Parliament (MP) Ghulam Nabi Azad Thursday termed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as the “biggest opportunist”.
“Omar Abdullah is a biggest opportunist,” Azad told reporters while responding to the chief minister’s statement that Congress is an opportunist party.
He said Omar was the minister in Atal Bijari Vajpayee’s government in Centre. “Azad or Mufti were not ministers in Vajpayee’s government”.
“Omar has not that high stature for Congress to run for having alliance with his National Conference. There are many like him, who were running for having alliance with Congress,” he said.
Criticizing BJP for its divisive politics, Azad said the saffron party will not even be able to touch double digit in the assembly polls.
“Congress will emerge as largest party in State elections and will form next Government,” he said.
The former chief minister hailed the people of Kashmir for rejecting the boycott call of Hurriyat Conference and turning in large numbers to cast their votes.
“People of Kashmir have rejected Hurriyat Conference and BJP and voted in large numbers,” he said adding BJP failed to get benefit of boycott call following the high turn-out.
Addressing a public gathering in Khor area of Chamb Constituency, Azad said BJP was sinking in Jammu after facing a rout in Kashmir during the recently held elections.
He said as a last ditch effort, the BJP leaders were trying to mislead the voters in Jammu by luring them with false promises and hollow slogans.
“BJP can never deliver. This party ignored the people of Kashmir, and are now exploiting the people of Jammu for their petty political interests. In Kashmir, they have a different tone and language and in Jammu, they have different,” Azad said adding statements made by the BJP on issues like Article 370, AFSPA and Refugees were only political gimmickry.
The leader of opposition further said that the ceasefire violations had
reduced sharply during the tenure of UPA government. He said since the BJP came into power, the violations have increased manifold.
“The short term governance of Congress in Jammu and Kashmir saw equitable and just development of all the regions of the state. Road connectivity was made better. Schools, College, New Districts, tehsils were established. The healthcare sector was overhauled with the expansion of the infrastructure,” he added.
