MeT reiterates weather warning

Reiterating its warning, meteorological department has predicted rains and snowfall for the next six days in Jammu and Kashmir, with officials advising the state administration to remain alert to possible avalanches and landslides in hilly areas.
“Many places in the state are likely to witness heavy snowfall and rainfall from February 18 to 24 due to western disturbance over J&K, which may trigger avalanches and landslides,” said a Met official.
“Rains and snowfall are likely to occur during next 24 hours,” he said. “On February 19, sky is likely to remain partly cloudy with occurrence of rains and thunderstorm. From February 21 to 23, there is possibility of heavy snowfall and rains,” he added.
“There will be significant decrease in day temperatures and slight rise in night temperature during this period,” the official said. The Met has also warned the state administration that the upcoming weather system may disturb surface and air transport.
As earlier reported, the Meteorological Department has written to Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu about the prevailing weather situation in the state and its possible fallout.
“Under the influence of the disturbance, moderate rain and snowfall over higher reaches will occur at most places of Kashmir and Jammu divisions and at many places of Ladakh region. Some places may receive heavy rain and snow during this period. The weather conditions may trigger landslides and avalanches in vulnerable areas of the State,” an official spokesman said.
Meanwhile, the maximum and minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar on Tuesday was 10.1 degree Celsius and 3.9 degree Celsius respectively while it was 24.4 degree Celsius and 13 degree Celsius in Jammu respectively.
“The maximum and minimum temperature recorded in Leh was 7.5 degree Celsius and minus 2.9 degree Celsius respectively,” said an official. He added that it remained minus 6 degree Celsius and minus 8 degree Celsius in Kargil respectively.
