In a bid to improve traffic regulation in the City where traffic snarls are worsening with each passing day, the Traffic police Wednesday called a meeting resolving to relocate pavement vendors and initiate action against “erring bus drivers who resort to frequent stops.”

The meeting chaired by DIG Traffic Alok Kumar among others was attended by DIG central Kashmir, SSP Traffic Haseeb Ur Rehman, SMC Commissioner Tufail Mattoo and SDA officials.

“R&B will paint zebra crossings near traffic signal lights and also sketch yellow line in City area for movement of TATA 407 vehicles/minibuses to give passage to LMVs,” an official handout from the office of DIG Traffic Kashmir said.

“To discourage wrong parking on roadside in busy areas like Dalgate, TRC, Poloview, HSHS, Karan Nagar, LalChowk, Jahangir Chowketc, SMC will find a space in phase manner at these locations and notify those locations into paid parking to push parking of vehicles towards authorized parking places like LalChowk, Forest Lane, Poloviewetc,” it added.

“SDA has been asked to identify proper land for shifting of hawkers who always create hurdles in smooth movement of traffic in the City so that they will be shifted to the identified place,” the handout said adding “SMC/District Police and Traffic police will jointly start drive against vendors to make the City roads free for traffic movement.”

“Presently for picking of passengers, commercial vehicles stop here and there to create more problems in smooth movement of traffic. To avoid this, in entire City so far three dozen locations have been spotted by Traffic Police for stoppage of Commercial passenger vehicles plying in City, to discourage frequent boarding/deboarding of passengers, SMC will put sign boards “to stop” for these locations,” the handout said.

“It has also been decided that at all roundabouts/curves in City Srinagar, no vehicle shall be allowed to be parked on road side around 50 mtrs of the area to avoid traffic jamming.

“Traffic police and district police will jointly install Naka to check overloading in passenger vehicles besides challaning of driver. Passengers will be de-boarded from the mounted vehicles.”

Meanwhile City police through its concerned Thanas has started efforts to streamline vehicular traffic in areas like Batamaloo, Karan Nagar and Shaheed Gunj. Some commuters said they felt a sigh of relief Wednesday even as they hailed police for the efforts.
