11 Grenade attacks in 4 days shatter calm in Valley

Grenades are emerging as the new weapons of choice for militants in Kashmir as over the last four days, militants have carried out 11 grenade attacks at different places across Kashmir.
These grenade attacks, which have shattered the Ramzan ceasefire calm, have left 39 men, including 17 security men, injured. All these attacks in the past four days have taken place in Srinagar and south Kashmir’s Pulwama, Shopian and Anantnag districts.
Director General of Police Shesh Paul Vaid said most of the grenade attacks had been carried by the Jaish-e-Mohammad militant group. “We have got a module and will catch those involved in the recent grenade attacks,” Vaid said.
Five grenades were lobbed by militants on June 1, targeting security men and a lawmaker of the ruling party from Pulwama district. Eight persons, including four policemen, were injured in these attacks.
On the anniversary of the first battle of Islam, Battle of Badr, militants carried out a series of grenade attacks in Srinagar, injuring seven persons, including four CRPF personnel. The grenades were lobbed at Fathekadal, Maisuma and Magarmalbagh.
One of the grenade attacks in the city centre on June 2 was caught on camera when militants threw a grenade at a bulletproof bunker on the Budshah bridge.
On June 3, a grenade was tossed in south Kashmir’s Anantnag. However, there was no injury to anyone.
And today, at least 23 persons, including eight security men, were injured in two grenade attacks in Shopian and Pulwama districts.
Inspector General, Operations, CRPF, Kashmir, Zulfiqar Hassan said grenade attacks “are not rare and have been happening throughout”. “But, yes, the number of grenade attacks in the past few days has been high,” he said.
