Traffic Chaos, Waterlogging, and Power Outages Reported Across the City
Srinagar, 16 April 2025: A City Struggles Amid Weather Extremes
Incessant rains and gusty winds have thrown life out of gear in Srinagar, with residents grappling with traffic jams, waterlogging, and power outages. The downpour, which began earlier this week, has disrupted daily routines, leaving commuters stranded and businesses struggling to operate.
Key Issues Faced by Residents
- Traffic Jams:
- Major routes in Downtown and city center areas witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic, with vehicles stuck for hours.
- Commuters reported severe delays, particularly in areas like Khanyar, Nowhatta, and Batamaloo.
- Waterlogging:
- Defunct drainage systems have led to waterlogging in several neighborhoods, including Bemina, Natipora, and Noor Bagh.
- Residents have called for urgent action to address the issue, which worsens with every downpour.
- Dilapidated Roads:
- Ongoing Smart City projects have left roads dug up and filled with construction material, creating cesspools during rainfall.
- Potholes and uneven surfaces have further compounded the problem, making navigation difficult for commuters.
- Power Outages:
- Gusty winds have caused power disruptions in multiple areas, adding to the challenges faced by residents.
Authorities’ Response
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has deployed mobile dewatering pumps to clear waterlogged streets. Permanent dewatering stations are also operational, with teams working round the clock to mitigate the impact of the rains.
An SMC official stated, “We are monitoring the situation closely and addressing waterlogging issues as they arise. Our teams are on the ground, ensuring that critical areas are cleared.”
Looking Ahead
With the Meteorological Department forecasting continued rainfall and gusty winds, residents are advised to remain cautious and plan their movements accordingly. Authorities are urged to expedite infrastructure repairs and drainage improvements to prevent further disruptions.
