From Politics to Pages: Farooq Abdullah’s Alleged Remarks Drive Book Sales

Farooq Controversy Ignites Demand for Dulat’s Book in Kashmir

Srinagar 18 April 2025: The political storm surrounding former RAW chief A.S. Dulat’s latest book, “The Chief Minister and the Spy – An Unlikely Friendship”, has sparked a surge in demand for the publication across Srinagar. The book, which delves into sensitive topics like the abrogation of Article 370, has become the center of heated debates in the Kashmir Valley, particularly over claims regarding National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah.

The Controversy: Farooq Abdullah and Article 370

In his book, Dulat recounts a conversation with Farooq Abdullah in 2020, where the NC leader allegedly expressed frustration over not being consulted about the abrogation of Article 370. Dulat writes, “Farooq was terribly hurt… maybe. When I met him in 2020, he told me, ‘The NC could even have had the proposal passed in the Assembly… we would have helped. Why were we not taken into confidence?’”

These revelations have triggered a political uproar, with opposition parties labeling the claims as a “betrayal” of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Farooq Abdullah, however, has dismissed the allegations as a “cheap stunt” aimed at boosting book sales, calling the content “full of inaccuracies.”

A Surge in Book Sales

The controversy has had an unexpected side effect—skyrocketing demand for Dulat’s book. Bookstores in Srinagar report that copies are flying off the shelves as readers rush to uncover the details behind the claims.

  • Gulshan Book Store: Sheikh Aijaz, the store’s owner, revealed that over 100 copies were sold within three days. “Initially, the book wasn’t in high demand, but after the news broke and political leaders began commenting, interest surged,” he said.
  • Other Bookstores: Another bookstore owner shared that their initial stock of 10 copies sold out within hours. “Media coverage and political statements have significantly boosted curiosity,” he added.

The book’s appeal has transcended political circles, sparking interest among readers from various walks of life. “Dulat’s books have always received a good response, but this one has created a buzz like no other,” said a bookseller.

Farooq Abdullah’s Absence at Book Launch

Amid the controversy, Farooq Abdullah chose not to attend the book’s launch event in New Delhi. His daughter, Safia Abdullah Khan, confirmed his absence in a post on X (formerly Twitter), further fueling speculation about the NC leader’s stance on the matter.

Broader Implications

The controversy highlights the enduring sensitivity of Article 370 in Kashmir’s political discourse. While Dulat’s book has reignited debates about the region’s political history, it has also underscored the public’s appetite for insider accounts of pivotal events.
