Mirwaiz slams govt for flawed relief distribution

The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Friday hit out at the state government for failing to provide relief to deserving flood victims in Kashmir. He also announced to establish a grievance cell after Eid-ul-Adha to “monitor the humanitarian assistance” and “make public any discrepancy” in the process.
“Despite passing of several weeks since floods, the deserving flood-affected persons are yet to get the relief. The situation on ground belies tall claims of New Delhi and state government of providing succor to
the victims. The flood-hit people are still craving for ration. Most of the rice truckloads are being distributed among blue-eyed persons while common people have been left to fend for themselves,” Mirwaiz said, addressing Friday congregation at historic Jamia Masjid here.
He said that complaints have also been received from some quarters that flood affected goods were being “repackaged” and sold by shopkeepers. “This is highly condemnable,” he said.
“In view of alleged favouritism and discrimination in distribution of relief being provided by the Government, the Hurriyat has decided to constitute a public grievance cell where such complaints can be registered,” he said.
Mirwaiz said the details of complaints would be made public soon.  “The cell will also act as a watchdog to ensure that fair practices are followed by the authorities  in the rehabilitation of affected people. If any discrepancies are found in this regard, they will be exposed through media,” he said.
Mirwaiz said it is unfortunate that the Government of India is yet to allow the international aid to flow to the flood-hit Valley. “Even though Kashmiris residing in different countries have contacted the Indian Embassy for allowing aid to reach their brethren, the GOI has put the condition that it can be allowed only if it’s sent though the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. It is unfortunate.”
He appealed people to observe Eid-ul-Adha with austerity.
Meanwhile, Mirwaiz announced that Eid prayer would be offered at historic Eidgah at 10 am.
