‘Obscene’ Fashion Show in Gulmarg During Ramadan Sparks Massive Outrage; CM Omar Abdullah Seeks Report

Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir – A fashion show held at the world-renowned ski resort of Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramadan has ignited a firestorm of criticism and outrage across Jammu and Kashmir. The event, described as “obscene” by critics, featured models walking on snow in designer outfits, sparking widespread condemnation from religious and political leaders.

The controversy erupted after videos and images of the event, organized by designer duo Shivan & Narresh to mark their 15th anniversary, went viral on social media. The collection showcased included sculptural ski suits, après-ski dresses, and winter layers, but the timing and nature of the event have drawn sharp criticism.

Religious Leaders Condemn the Event

Hurriyat Conference chief and Kashmir’s head priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, expressed his outrage on social media, calling the event “outrageous” and “unacceptable.” In a post on X, he stated, “Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramzan an obscene fashion show is organised in Gulmarg. Pictures and videos from which have gone viral sparking shock and anger among people. How could it be tolerated in the valley known for its sufi, saint culture and the deeply religious outlook of its people? Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in #Kashmir.”

Political Leaders Voice Their Concerns

Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi criticized the event, calling it a “cultural invasion in the guise of tourism.” He stated, “The images from Gulmarg are shocking. This is what cultural invasion in the disguise of tourism looks like. They show an utter disregard for Kashmiri sentiments. The Tourism department officials involved should be immediately taken to task, as well as the organizers Shivan & Narresh.”

Peoples Conference leader Sajad Lone also weighed in, describing the event as “an eminently avoidable event” during the sacred month. He remarked, “The fashion show in Gulmarg was an eminently avoidable event, in the holy month of Ramadan. I consider myself to be a person of liberal orientation and believe in dignified and mutually respectful coexistence. But this was not the best time to host such an event.”

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Responds

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the public anger as “totally understandable.” In a statement, his office said, “The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities & that too during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities, and I’ve asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow from this report.”

Social Media Backlash

The event has also drawn criticism from social activists and local organizations. Social media platforms were flooded with posts condemning the fashion show, with many questioning the rationale behind organizing such an event during Ramadan in a predominantly Muslim region.

Designer Duo Shivan & Narresh Under Fire

The designer duo, known for their bold and eclectic designs, have faced significant backlash for their decision to host the show in Gulmarg. While the event was intended to celebrate their 15 years in the fashion industry, the timing and location have overshadowed the milestone.

Cultural Sensitivities Ignored?

The incident has reignited debates about cultural sensitivity and the balance between tourism promotion and respecting local traditions. Critics argue that the event reflects a lack of understanding of the region’s cultural and religious ethos.

As the controversy continues to unfold, all eyes are on the report requested by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, which is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the event and determine the next steps.
