BJP Leader and Former Jammu & Kashmir MLA Faqir Mohammad Khan Dies by Suicide
In a tragic turn of events, Faqir Mohammad Khan, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MLA from Gurez, Jammu & Kashmir, reportedly died by suicide on Thursday. The incident occurred at his government residence in Tulsibagh, Srinagar, where Khan allegedly used his licensed revolver to take his own life.
Khan, aged 62, had a long and distinguished political career. He was first elected to the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly in 1996 as an Independent candidate. In 2020, he joined the BJP and contested the 2024 Assembly elections from the Gurez constituency on the party’s ticket. However, he was defeated by National Conference leader Nazir Ahmad Khan.
The reasons behind Khan’s decision remain unclear, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to his death. BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur confirmed the incident, expressing shock and grief over the loss.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah paid tribute to Khan, describing him as a “true grassroots leader” who worked tirelessly for the development of Gurez. The Jammu & Kashmir Assembly observed two minutes of silence in his memory, with leaders across the political spectrum expressing their condolences.
Khan’s passing has sent shockwaves through the political community, leaving many to reflect on his contributions and the challenges faced by public figures. His family, colleagues, and constituents mourn the loss of a dedicated leader whose legacy will be remembered in the region.
