Geelani calls for shutdown on July 17
Two more people have succumbed to injuries, taking the death toll in the Zainakote accident to six.
Four people had lost their lives and equal number sustained injuries in the road accident on Srinagar-Baramulla highway Wednesday morning when an Army pick-up truck hit a passenger car.
Police sources said that the driver of the Army truck has been arrested.
Immediately after the mishap, people gathered at the site and staged massive protests which led to a traffic jam.
Police fired tear gas canisters on the agitated crowd but have failed to break up the demonstration, witnesses said.
The army vehicle, according to a police spokesperson, has been seized.
“An FIR has been registered at Parimpora police station and investigation into the matter has been taken up,” an official handout read.
Meanwhile, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, has called for a strike on 17 July to mourn the death of civilians in the tragic accident.
