Jammu SP dies of breathing disorder; swine flu suspected
Two more persons died of swine flu here on Thursday taking the death toll in Kashmir valley to four.
A 32-year-old pregnant woman from Budgam and a 40-year-old man from Lar Ganderbal succumbed to the deadly H1N1 virus.
“The woman was admitted here on Wednesday and underwent cesarean section, but though the baby was saved, she herself did not survive. The woman was kept in the isolation ward and we received her laboratory reports late which confirmed she had contracted swine flu,” Medical Superintendent of SKIMS, Dr Farooq Jan told late last evening.
“The man from Lar (Ganderbal) was admitted here on Tuesday and diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). He was kept in the isolation ward. The lab report, received after his death, also confirmed that he had contracted swine flu,” Dr Jan added.
Meanwhile, a Superintendent of Police died of respiratory disorder and doctors are awaiting his culture report to ascertain whether his death was due to swine flu. “The patient was admitted in our hospital in a critical condition as he suffered from respiratory related disorder,” Dr SS Soodan, director ASCCMS&H Jammu told wire agency PTI.
The deceased, Sunil Gupta was SP (administration) at the Zonal Police Head quarter, Jammu.
When asked if it was a case of swine flu he said, “Nothing can be ruled out right now as the culture report of the deceased is still awaited.”
He said before being shifted to ASCCMS&H Jammu Gupta was admitted at the police hospital, “The case history was just five days old and he died because of ARDS which is a respiratory related disorder. We can only confirm whether the death is related to swine flu only after we get the culture report of the patient.”
“Gupta died in the hospital today, doctors are yet to confirm the cause of the death,” SSP Jammu Uttam Chand said.
Gupta served the J&K Police department in different capacities. He was promoted as SP (M) in June 2013 and posted at Zonal Police Headquarter (ZPHQ) Jammu. He died at Jammu this morning at the age of 49, apparently due to cardiac arrest.
