City areas complain unfair relief distribution by humanitarian groups

Flood victims say proper mechanism needed to ensure only deserving get help; Seek DDC’s intervention

Residents of various City areas have complained against “massive irregularities” in the distribution of relief material by the government, NGOs and other welfare committees.

People from Guru Bazar, Shutra Shahi, Shaheed Gunj, Karan Nagar, Bemina, and some other areas called GK office complaining that the relief material was being distributed inequitably.
“It is quite shocking that the relief material that is being brought to our area is being handed over to certain influential people, while the deserving ones are being ignored,” said a complainant from Guru Bazar.
He said that there are scores of people in the area who deserve to be given the relief. “But there is total mismanagement in the distribution of the relief. Whatever material comes is being selectively distributed among the people,” he said.
He said that some people were misguiding the NGOs and other organizations distributing the relief ensuring that only a selected group of people in the area are benefitted while all those who really deserve to be helped are ignored.
Altaf Ahmad, a complainant from the area said: “There should be proper mechanism in the distribution of the relief so that the basic purpose which is to help the people in need is achieved.”
“The organizations which are distributing the relief should at least adopt some norms so as to ensure that only the deserving people get the relief,” he said.
“We lament that this discrimination is done by none other than our own people at local level who are supposed to distribute relief among the deserving victims,” said Ali Muhammad Dar a government servant.
