Recurring flash floods in Kargil; residents worried
People of the border district are facing immense problems due to recurring flash floods during the past one month.
Fresh flash floods have occurred in several areas of Kargil in the mountainous Ladakh region, damaging private and public property.
The floods have been reported in Hunderman Brok, Maal, Lankarchey Brok, Thang, Ichu-Shargandik, Kochik, Thulus and Pursa due to which irrigational canals, livestock including Pashmina goats, roads and trees have been washed away.

Talking to us, people of these areas demanded immediate restoration of the damaged irrigational canals, protection walls along waterways, compensation for lost trees and crops as well as livestock. They said that sudden rise in temperature leads to abrupt melting of snow which results in flash floods.
Acting Chief Executive Councilor, Aga Syed Abass Razvi, called a meeting of district officers and councilors which was attended by Executive Councilor Syed Mujtaba, Deputy Commissioner Kargil Hassan Khan and other district officers.
During the meeting, the acting-CEC directed the concerned officers to start restoration works on war footing particularly of irrigational canals.
A team led by Dy SP SDRF Kargil along with Councilor Shakar Zakir Hussain visited the famous Shashi Lake after news of sudden water leakage threatening Sandoo, Sanjak, Kharboo and Lhalung villages. The team assured the people of immediate solution for stopping the leakage.
Councilor Zakir Hussain said that if the leakage is not stopped in time, there is apprehension of huge damage from the lake on the pattern of Phuktal. He however said that people need not to panic but should be alert.
Zakir added that MLA Kargil, Haji Asgar Ali Karbalai, has called on Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and briefed him about the situation on which Div Com directed DC Kargil to assess the situation immediately.
Councilor Poyen Liyaqat Ali today called on Deputy Commissioner Kargil Hassan Khan and requested for relief and rehabilitation works at Hundarman Brok where people have suffered huge losses. Hassan Khan assured the Councilor that immediate steps will be taken on priority basis.
