Clashes erupt in Sumbal against ‘Militant Killings’; Cellular Network, Internet Shut

Cellular network including mobile internet has also been suspended in Sumbal. Only State-run BSNL phones are working.

Clashes erupted between protesters and government forces in Sumbal area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Monday.
Witnesses said that youth took to streets and pelted stones on Police Station Sumbal to protest the killing of four “militants” by government forces in an “encounter” early today.
“The police personnel present inside the police station responded by firing tear smoke shells,” they said.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in Sumbal against the killings.
Cellular network including mobile internet has also been suspended in Sumbal. Only State-run BSNL phones are working.
Police on Monday claimed to have foiled an early morning Fidayeen attack on CRPF’s 45 Battalion camp in Sumbal area by killing four militants.
“The fidayeen militants kept firing as they tried to enter the camp. The attack was effectively repulsed by the CRPF sentry and Sumbal Police,” CRPF Deputy Inspector General M. Dinakaran told IANS.
