Srinagar-Jammu Highway Blocked for Second Day After Landslides, Stranding Travelers

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained blocked due to landslides for the second consecutive day today.

Efforts to re-open the highway for vehicular traffic movement did not prove successful due to multiple landslides. The landslides were triggered due to incessant rains at various places from Ramban to Banihal.

Traffic department officers said Dalwass stretch of the highway was made traffic worthy at few places. The rains that lashed the area triggered multiple mudslides and shooting stones at several places between Nashri and Banihal

On the other hand, landslides have occurred at various places like Dalwass Mehad, Cafeteria Trishul Mode, Morh Ghori Seri, Maroog, T2, and Digdool and even at some places boulders are rolling down from the hillock..

They said concerned agencies like NHAI are trying hard to restore the National Highway at the earliest in a few places. Hundreds of vehicles carrying essential commodities like oil gas ration are stranded at different locations in Jammu, Udhampur, and other places between Srinagar and Jammu.

However, some private Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) en route to Jammu which were stopped at Chanderkote on Tuesday have been given safe passage by the police after a single-lane road was prepared at Dalwass Monday night.

Officers claimed that incessant rains are hampering road restoration work at various places between Nashri and Banihal. If the condition of weather improves we will be able to restore traffic on the highway they claimed.

Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, National Highway, Rohit Baskotra late Tuesday evening said the highway is still blocked at several places due to landslide and rolling of stones from hills.

He advised commuters not to undertake journeys on the National Highway till the weather improves and road clearance.
