Bitter Chill: Cold Wave Freezes Kashmir Valley, Srinagar at -0.4°C
Cold wave grips Valley, Srinagar shivers at -0.4°C; Most places in Kashmir reeled under sub-zero night temperature as the winter chill gripped the Valley due to the recent snowfall in the higher reaches, officials said on Thursday.
Srinagar, Nov 22: The Kashmir Valley is experiencing a severe cold wave, with most areas recording sub-zero night temperatures. The recent snowfall in the higher reaches has intensified the winter chill, causing temperatures to drop below freezing.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.4 degree Celsius, a slight increase from the previous night’s minus 0.7 degree Celsius. However, the temperature remains 1.1 degrees Celsius below the normal for this time of the season. Qazigund experienced a low of minus 2 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam, the coldest spot in the Valley, recorded minus 3.2 degrees Celsius. The Gulmarg ski resort registered a low of 0 degree Celsius, and Kupwara shivered at minus 0.9 degree Celsius. At Kokernag, the minimum temperature settled just above the freezing point at 0.7 degree Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that these cold conditions are expected to continue until November 23. On November 24, the weather is likely to be cloudy with a possibility of light rain or snow at scattered places in the Valley, especially in the higher reaches.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe during this period of extreme cold.
