Non-local attacks elderly couple in Srinagar, tries to loot gold; Arrested

Srinagar: A non-local confectioner Wednesday attacked a shopkeeper and his wife inside his house in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar outskirts and attempted to loot the woman’s gold bangles.

The assailant, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was reportedly in an inebriated state and was a regular customer of the shopkeeper Ghulam Rasool Khan.

The shopkeeper Ghulam Rasool Khan said that a masked assailant entered their home and assaulted his wife with a sharp object, leaving her with severe cuts on her wrists.

Khan added that he confronted the assailant, trying to save his wife, and raised an alarm that prompted the police to rush to the scene.

The police swiftly responded, arresting the assailant and registering an FIR vide number 175 at the local police station. Superintendent of Police, Hazratbal, Hilal Khaliq Bhat assured that the authorities will take stern action against those involved in criminal activities, ensuring such incidents do not recur.

Meanwhile, a forensic team arrived at the scene to collect the samples.

Interestingly, sources revealed to the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the assailant and victim were familiar with each other, as the confectioner (accused) frequently purchased food items from Khan’s establishment. The investigation is currently underway.
