Doctor Suspended After Uterus Removal Error, Hospital OT Sealed in North Kashmir
Srinagar 6 Feb: The Jammu and Kashmir government has suspended Dr Anjum Nazir and Dr Tariq Ahmad Dar following an investigation into a case of alleged medical negligence at Hakeem Sonuallah Hospital, Sopore. Dr Nazir, a consultant gynaecologist, reportedly removed a woman’s uterus instead of performing an ENT surgery, sparking public outrage.
According to Government Order No. 115 – JK (HME) of 2025, issued on February 6, 2025, the Health and Medical Education Department has placed both doctors under suspension with immediate effect. Additionally, the operation theatre of the hospital has been sealed, and both doctors are barred from engaging in any private practice across Jammu and Kashmir.
The controversy erupted after news of the botched surgery went viral on social media, leading to widespread anger and demands for strict action. Residents and activists have called for a lifetime ban on Dr Nazir’s private practice, criticising the lack of oversight in private healthcare facilities. “Such negligence is unacceptable,” said a local resident. “A doctor who makes such a mistake should not be allowed to practise again.”
Authorities acted swiftly, with officials raiding the hospital to assess the allegations. The government has assured a thorough investigation, with potential legal action if the claims are substantiated.
