Police starts drive against beggars, 37 held
Srinagar police has launched a special drive against beggars who have swarmed the City these days causing annoyance to the general public, a police handout Tuesday said.
“On the directions of SSP Srinagar, Amit Kumar City police launched a special drive against the beggars. So far police has arrested 37 local and non local beggars,” the handout added.
“A number of public delegations had apprised SSP Srinagar about the mushroom growth of beggars in City who create nuisance at public places and places of worship. The menace of begging is assuming alarming proportions in City and other districts,” it added.
“All the arrested beggars were produced before the local magistrates under Jammu and Kashmir Beggary Act, 1960 who have ordered their push back to their native places,” the handout added.
SSP Amit Kumar said the drive would continue. Meanwhile general public has hailed the police action.
