Clashes erupt in Pulwama
Clashes erupted today between mourners and security forces in Padgampora village, native village of the slain militant commander killed in an encounter yesterday, leaving at least three persons injured.
Irshad Ahmad Ganaie, the second-in-command of Lashkar-e-Toiba in Kashmir, was killed on Saturday in the Kakapora area of Pulwama after a brief gunfight with security forces.
Hundreds of people reached Padgampora village in Pulwama this morning to attend the funeral of the slain militant. After Ganaie’s burial, people clashed with police and CRPF men.
Youths threw stones while the police used tear smoke shells, fired pellets baton charged to quell the protests, said locals.
Three persons were injured during the clashes, two of whom received pellet injuries. Clashes continued throughout the day and were mainly concentrated in Padgampora village.
“We were able to keep things under control,” said a senior police official from Pulwama. — OC
