41% increase in crime against women in JK since 2008

There has been a 41 percent increase in crime against women over the last eight years in Jammu and Kashmir, the government revealed on Tuesday.
In 2008, 2087 cases of crime against women were registered in the state while in 2015 this figure went up to 3535.
In a written reply to a question by Naresh Kumar Gupta in the Legislative Council, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the crime rate against women has shown a marginal increase in respect of certain offences and decrease in others.
Kidnapping and domestic violence have witnessed an increase of over 40 percent and 58 percent respectively during the period. “The number of cases related to kidnapping reported in 2008 was 653 against 1097 cases registered in 2015,” the reply said.
Domestic violence related cases have also gone up by 58 percent though it has decreased if compared to the previous two years.
Accoording to the official reply, suicide attempts in last eight years has also gone up by 48 percent.
Molestation cases have also gone up by around 35 percent. As many as 1340 cases of molestation were reported in 2015 against 869 cases in 2008. Cases related to rape has also increased with 312 cases reported in 2015 as against 221 in 2008. However, rape cases have witnessed a decline if compared to the last two years.
