Kashmir Inc invites Canada to invest in JK power sector

Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries today urged the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner to help Jammu and Kashmir tap 20,000 MWs power potential.

A delegation of KCCI led by its vice president, Gowhar Maqbool met Deputy High Commissioner, Canada, Jess Dutton and his team here and discussed various issues.

“Canada being the third largest hydroelectricity producer in the world (after China and Brazil) can help us tap potential of 20,000 MWs out of which only 2500 MWs have been harnessed,” a chamber handout said.

It said Canada can help Kashmir through necessary technology and finances to tap its water resources so as to make this state economically stable.

The chamber said J&K has modified its power policy to allow up to 100 MW projects to be set up by IPP in joint venture with local entrepreneurs.

It said the majority stake is to be with the local party while above 10 MW project can be set up  in  joint venture  either  with State government or private sector.

“We would like the embassy of Canada to identify/promote companies in hydroelectric power from Canada to interact with our entrepreneurs through the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry so that this sector is promoted and projects set up,” the statement adds.

KCC has urged the Canadian delegation to lift travel advisories on visit to Kashmir.
